Ristow made “Becoming Human” at his studio in early 2014. It is made of welded steel and weighs 20,000 pounds. He describes his sculpture as a “cartoonishly rendered” robot and explains that every 30 minutes, the robot lifts a flower to sniff.
“The robot was commissioned by and displayed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Southern California. But, it was fabricated here in Taos,” he says. “I built it with three other principal fabricators (for welding and cutting steel), working for three months.”
